Make, Don’t Buy, Natural Bath and Body Products

Natural bath and body products are becoming increasingly prevalent in the stores. However, sometimes they are not what they appear to be. If you read the labels of many of these so-called "natural" bath and body products, they are anything except what they claim to be. They are also marked up at staggeringly high levels from the cost of their ingredients.

Natural bath and body products don't have to be purchased from an exclusive and expensive specialty retailer. You can easily make your own skin care products right at home. You can easily create a wide variety of products such as soaps, bar and liquid shampoos, lotions, balms and body polishes that are guaranteed to make you feel great and give you glowing skin. Your own products often work just as well or better than commercial versions, and for much less money. The best part of all is that you won't be exposing yourself or your family to the often controversial chemical ingredients present in commercial preparations.

Natural bath and body products can be created from ingredients you already have on hand in your pantry. You can make simple scrubs from very common and available ingredients such as olive and grapeseed oils and either sugar or sea salt. What you could make for mere pennies at home will cost you a lot of money in the bath specialty shops. If you'd like you scrubs to have a certain scent, you can add a few drops of essential oils to your scrubs to suit your mood. It's just that easy!

Other natural bath and body products that you can make without a lot of effort are lotions and body butters. If you know how to make salad dressing from scratch, making lotions and butters is not a big stretch. Just like salad dressing such as mayonnaise is made from a base of oil and a form of water (lemon juice) and an emulsifier to bind the oil and water together, lotions are made the same basic way. Instead of using egg as an emulsifier as with mayonnaise, lotion making uses a wax to bind its principal ingredients together. Beeswax is often used, as is a commercial ingredient made from natural sources known as "e-wax" (short for emulsifying wax.) The consistency of these products are easily adjusted to thicker or thinner versions simply by adjusting the amount of water in the recipe.

Natural bath and body products that you can make for just a few cents are bath salts. Bath salts are extremely quick and easy to make. Their inexpensive ingredients consist of just a few items: Epsom and/or sea salts, baking soda and optional ingredients include glycerin to moisturize the skin and essential oils for fragrance and their therapeutic properties. It's so easy to make many of these lovely products; don't you want to learn how?
