Homemade Lip Balm: A Tasty Treat For Your Lips

If you knew just how easy it is to make your own homemade lip balm without harmful additives like petrolatum, you would never go back to buying it in the stores! A little melting, a little stirring, a little pouring and voila! Beautiful, natural homemade lip balm made in a snap!

Homemade lip balm is a very simple product to make and one that can easily be customized to your own tastes. When I says “tastes” I mean that literally too! You can make lip balms with great flavors such as honey, cranberry, chocolate, vanilla, peppermint and more. You can even make lip balms that taste just like your favorite hard candy. All you need is a few basic, simple ingredients, and some very basic cooking skills. If you can melt some wax over a bowl of hot water, you have the skill to make balm.

If you want to make homemade lip balm, you need to learn the basic principles of its preparation. It goes without saying that when making any type of preparation to be used on the skin, cleanliness is of the utmost importance. You certainly do not want to incorporate any bacteria or fungi into your finished product by using unsanitized equipment and containers! Make sure to sanitize all of your equipment. A great, inexpensive sanitizing solution is one teaspoon of bleach per quart of hot water. Leave all of your equipment such as measuring cups, stirring spoons and containers in the bleach solution for a minimum of five minutes to kill any microbes. Let them air dry completely before using them.

Homemade lip balm also requires use of a preservative if it is to be kept for more than a day or two. Fortunately, an easy, inexpensive preservative can be found in the form of a vitamin E capsule. Vitamin E is an anti-oxidant, and works well to help increase the shelf life of homemade beauty products of all types. This works great for balms that you make for your own use; however if you are thinking about selling your own lip balms, you will need to use a commercial preservative to satisfy federal health regulations for cosmetics and skin care products.

You can easily change the consistency of homemade lip balm quite easily. If you like a more waxy consistency, simply add a little more beeswax to the recipe. If you like a softer consistency, increase the amount of oil in your recipe slightly. Its fun to experiment to find the consistency and flavoring that you like the best. You can even add some natural colorant to your recipes in the form of beet juice and cranberries to add a beautiful flush to your lips.
