Homemade Bubble Bath: Kid Approved Fun

Homemade bubble bath is one of the most inexpensive and fun retreats from our daily grind. Soaking in a hot tub full of bubbles just makes you feel good! Maybe it takes us back to the carefree time when we were kids and Mom put our grubby little selves into soak in a tub full of bubbles–who knows? But there are very few of us who wouldn’t admit to enjoying a nice bubble bath every now and then.

Commercial bubble baths can be full of questionable chemical ingredients, but you can make your own bubble bath easily with just a bar of castile soap.

Here is a basic bubble bath recipe:

1 bar (grated)castile soap

1 quart warm distilled water

2 oz liquid glycerin (Note: this is a by-product of soap making, and may contain animal fats. If you prefer not to use this, there are vegetable versions of glycerin available. It is about double the price of ordinary glycerin, but still quite inexpensive.)

3 to 4 drops essential oil of your choice

Mix the water and grated soap together until all the soap is dissolved. Using hot water helps the soap gratings dissolve faster. When the soap is dissolved into the water, add the glycerin and essential oil. Stir gently, and store in an unbreakable bottle. As the recipe has no preservatives, it should be used promptly.

This bubble bath recipe is very safe to use for kids, as it does not contain potentially harmful ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulphate, which is commonly used as a foaming agent in commercial bubble bath products.

If you don’t even want to be bothered grating the castile soap for your bubble bath, you can use some nice, natural liquid castile soap, such as from Dr. Bronner’s. Dr. Bronner’s liquid castile soap does already come in some scents, but if you prefer, you can buy the unscented version and add your own essential oils for fragrance.
