Body Butter Recipe – Homemade, Easy and Cheap!

You know those body butters that cost about $13 (or more!) for 4.5 ounces? (That’s $2.80 an ounce for you keeping score.) Well, here’s how you can make your own, quite easily, for a fraction of that.
You need:
Shea Butter
Coconut oil
(optional) fragrance or essential oil
You can make this in very small batches if you like; we’re measuring in parts here. The recipe is:
5 parts shea butter (liquid)
1 part coconut oil (liquid)
To get the ingredients to a liquid state if they aren’t so already, just briefly warm them in a microwave safe dish until melted. Keep an eye on them — you just want them liquid, not boiling or burnt. Combine the ingredients and stir constantly until mixture begins to cool and thicken; if you are making a large enough batch you can leave it to whip in a standing mixer. Add your fragrance if applicable (do it to ‘taste’ – some people like it strong) and make sure it’s mixed thoroughly.
You can get Shea Butter for about $6 and Coconut Oil for less than $2.50 — that’s for about 11 ounces of stuff, the total of which costs less than one small container of commercial butter.
Now: if you are won over by gimmicky claims on body butters, that they contain “fruit essence” or other fancy ingredients, I’ll let you in on a secret: it probably means they just wave a banana over the vat while it’s stirring. My dad used to be in the chemical industry and was involved in formulating a few beauty products in his day, and he insists most products that claim to have “essence” of anything usually contain virtually none of it. You are, of course, free to wave whatever fruit you like along the container.
